Artist's Statement and Bio

My work is representational. My work is nature-based. Nature is my starting point, in both theme and color. The push of the land, the sweep of the field or the water, the angles of the tree line, all give me my inspiration. Local color - with the light playing against it - is my motivation. Moving from a mode of realism towards abstraction allows me to give my colors more expressive power.

Oils are still my preferred medium, but I often paint en plein air with soft pastels as a medium - their portability makes for easier access to vistas. Often my landscapes are from peripheral glimpses grab my attention, and demand to be recorded. Some of the influences on my art have the basic simplicity of Milton Avery, the intimacy and refinement of Georgia O’Keefe, and the startling effects of the luscious color combinations of Wolf Kahn.

"... Her paintings are created with confidence, juxtaposing richness against simplicity and strength against delicacy...(and are) rendered with care while maintaining ample drama."

    Robert Trotter, Virginian Pilot
